The Tasmanian Whisky Academy and the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) is pleased to bring the General Certificate of Distilling residential training event to Hobart again 12-16 March 2018.

The event is a 5-day technical event open to anyone who is currently distilling or has an interest in learning more about the technical aspects of distilling.

The course supports IBD’s General Certificate of Distilling curriculum, and will be useful for distillers who wish to use the course to improve their technical knowledge or for those wishing to go on and complete the General Certificate of Distilling.

NOTE: Be aware that the event itself does not provide the IBD General Certificate qualification – it supports the learning for the General Certificate, provides valuable technical development, and will assist those planning to do the IBD General Certificate of Distilling exam.

The course includes the first four days concentrating on the IBD General Certificate of Distilling curriculum and exam preparation and day 5 introduces three sessions focusing on Distillery Business aspects in the morning and a Flavour education course run over 2 hours in the afternoon. Additional cost to purchase the aroma kit.

Day 1 – Hobart Woolstore & Hobart Brewing Co
Raw materials; chemistry of whisky, grain; raw material processing; fermentation and brewery visit

Day 2 – Hobart Woolstore, Tas Cask Co and Sullivans Cove Distillery
Distillation fundamentals; Distillation technology and Post Distillation Control of Flavour

Day 3 – Nant Estate Distillery
Distillery Co-products; packaging; Process Control; Microbiology and Plant Cleaning; Engineering and Maintenance

Day 4 – Hobart Woolstore
Environmental Sustainability and Utilities; Health and Safety; Quality Management; Flavour Control; Practice Exam. Distiller drinks function.       

Day 5 – Hobart Woolstore
AM: Distillery Business fundamentals including content relevant to distilleries
PM: Aroma Recognition Education & Flavour profiling, navigation of the aroma kit (PRE-PURCHASE OF KIT OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED)

One of the most valuable parts of the event, based on feedback from previous events, is the networking opportunities that take place, and the relationships you are likely to form while at the course.

ABOUT IBD & THE QUALIFICATION

It is important to note that the course does not include registration to do the GCD exam with IBD, nor will it give the qualification. The 5-day event is designed to improve your knowledge, skills and to help you prepare for the exam. It may also help you with technical challenges you may face in your distillery.

To register to do the exam (which takes place in May and November each year) you must visit www.ibd.org.uk and visit the training and distillation sections.  The materials you receive are very valuable resources to refer to within your business.
